The Dominican Republic shares a land border with Haiti containing four official crossing points and more than twenty beyond the control of the authorities.

The Dominican Minister of Health, Rafael Sanchez, has confirmed a first case of the new Coronavirus in the Dominican Republic.

The patient is a 67-year-old Italian who had presented no symptoms of the virus upon his arrival in the Dominican Republic.

The Dominican Republic had gone so far as to refuse the docking of cruise ships in its efforts to contain this spreading virus which has become a pandemic. Hospital centers, at least eight, have been specially set up to help the country cope with the situation.
