Haiti-DR: Dominican Egg Producers Applaud President Abinader’s Border Trade Relaxation

Ouanaminthe, October 6th, 2023- In a significant move, President Luis Abinader’s decision to ease the border closure has garnered widespread praise from Dominican egg producers. While Haitian immigration concerns persist, this announcement marks a positive development for the Dominican Republic.

President Abinader’s recent visit to the La Vigia canal, which is undergoing restoration by the Dominican government, highlighted the importance of redirecting water from the Masacre River away from Haitian territory, especially in response to Haiti’s initiative to build a canal on their side of the border.

Manuel Escaño, representing the National Association of Egg Producers (Asohuevos), expressed his appreciation for President Abinader’s well-timed decision, stressing its potential to restore peace and confidence among traders who have anxiously awaited this move. He also pointed out that the relaxation of border trade restrictions would bring significant benefits to poultry producers and various other sectors, fostering stronger commercial connections between cities on both sides of the border, where critical markets are situated. The extended border closure has been particularly detrimental to local egg producers, resulting in substantial financial losses, reaching millions of dollars.
